Borgerskapets diskrete sjarm

1972–1973 Sculpture

Concrete head from his first solo exhibition in 1973. The National Museum bought it the same year.

One of the eight expressionless heads Enstad showed at his first solo exhibition, at Kunstnerforbundet in 1973: anonymous, mask-like portraits of those in power. Store norske leksikon mentions this very work when it explains how the large heads are read as symbols of the powerful. The title is the Norwegian title of Luis Buñuel’s 1972 film The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.

Lillehammer Art Museum owns a concrete cast that the artist cast and signed himself in 2000, 46 × 31 × 29 cm, bought by the museum’s acquisitions committee.

Northern Norway Art Museum owns a version dated 1974 and signed «Ola E 74», 49 × 35 × 36 cm. The material is not in the part of the museum’s catalogue that could be read.

Norsk biografisk leksikon dates the work to 1991; the National Museum and Lillehammer Art Museum give 1972–73.
