Stegosaurus

1979 Sculpture

Play sculpture in plywood, shaped like a lizard skeleton. Taken down in 2000.

The climbing frame won first prize in Arts Council Norway’s competition Sculpture in Play Environments in 1977. It was put up at Grünerløkka in 1979 and later stood in Torshovdalen in Oslo, before it was moved to Jølster. The work stirred public debate and was moved several times, and after vandalism and weather damage it was taken down in the spring of 2000.

Sogn og Fjordane Art Museum still lists the work in its catalogue, as a gift in 1988. Norwegian Wikipedia says it was sent to the county gallery in 1991, set on an islet in the Jølstra river at Vassenden, stored there from 2000 and finally thrown away because of rot.

Plywood according to Norsk biografisk leksikon and waterproof plywood according to the museum’s catalogue; Norsk kunstnerleksikon says wood.

Norsk kunstnerleksikon dates the work to 1978, Norsk biografisk leksikon and the museum to 1979.
